Apple’s iPhone 5 Announced: Features & Specs

Tim Cook & Phil Schiller took over the San Francisco stage this morning and presented one of the most hyped smartphone till date: the iPhone 5. After a quick joke which made us forget about the tension a bit, Apple’s most “beautiful product ever made”, as described by the presenter, was showed on the screen. “I present to you, the iPhone 5” exclaimed Phil. Well, that wasn’t surprising at all. And just in a few minutes, the iPhone 5 features and technical specifications were fed to the starving crowd.
As rumored, the newest marvel is made from an aluminum and glass body and tailored after a thin design, which Apple claims to be the thinnest ever encountered on a smartphone (ahem, not quite). Besides the glamour look and a glassy touch, the iPhone 5 comes with a new software version, iOS 6, and modifications to important internal components.

What’s interesting in the new iPhone 5?

  • Body: Besides being developed by Apple, the new iPhone is made entirely of glass and aluminum, while preserving a two tone scheme for the back-plate. By the company standards, this device is the thinnest ever built by them, measuring only 7.6mm (approximately 18% smaller than the past generation). Besides that, it only weights 112 grams and its form is a bit longer than what we were used to.
  • Display: As leaked before, the display used by the iPhone 5 measures 4 inches in diagonal, a bit larger than in the past but nothing to cause worries for the design team. The pixel resolution is around 1136 by 640 pixels, offering a Retina-compliant density as always. Moreover, the display has the touchscreen area built right inside it and offers 44% more color saturation (full sRGB).
  • Connectivity: Of course, the new iPhone has an LTE antenna. Besides offering 4G speeds, buyers will have the ability of using an ultra-fast connection, and for the network without LTE, the iPhone 4 has HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA prepared. Also, the Wi-Fi has been ramped up, and now offers dual-channel 5GHz with max performance up to 150Mbps.
  • Processors: Apple has moved an A6 processor inside the model, which offers double the performance, smaller design and lower power consumption. The same happened to the graphical unit.
  • Battery: Thanks to new technologies, room for a larger battery was made. Thus, the iPhone 5 can offer over 8 hours of usage over LTE networks and even more. iPhone 5 battery
  • Camera: The new camera features an 8-megapixel sensor capable of delivering 3264×2448 resolutions, a hybrid IR filter, backside illumination and five-element lens. In English, it’s thinner, faster, more stable and offers a hell of performance. Moreover, you can now make use of Panorama shots by swiping the phone around while in camera mode. As for videos, we have 1080p quality, video stabilization, face detection and more. Not bad Apple, not bad at all.
  • FaceTime: This service will be offered over the cellular connection, with a 720p HD camera, face detection features and three microphones to be used.
  • Connector – the 8-pin signal design was adopted and named Lightning, while adaptors with for the past generation will be provided.
  • iOS 6 – the new toy is optimized for wider screen, offers improved scaling for legacy apps, a new version of iCloud, a better mapping service and other 200 of these. On the downside, Siri stayed pretty much the same and only app integration was implemented in the newest version – an opportunity for competition, might I say. Oh, and the 3GS will receive it soon.
