Apple Announces Super Thin iMac, Starts at $1299

Quite an event from Apple today! A lot of products have been updates, while new ones, such as the iPad Mini, have been launched. The biggest product that Apple has, the iMac, has just been renewed and it now has a very, very sexy look. Measuring just 5mm, the new iMac is just insanely thin. It comes in two versions: 27 inches with a 2560 x 1440 display and 21.5 inches with a 1920 x 1080 one.

Faster, Thinner, Brilliant iMac Announced

Just like the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, the new iMac has a 178-degree viewing angle. The fact that the new iMac is super slim might be enough for some to grab it, but there’s a lot underneath to power this beast:
  • Core i5 or i7 processors
  • up to 3TB of storagefour USB
  • 128GB SSD
  • 1TB or 3TB hard drive
The 21.5-inch iMac has a 2.7GHz i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 1 TB hard at t $1,299. The  27-inch model costs $1,799.  With the launch of the new iMac, Apple has announced FusionDrive, a new feature that lets the sotrage be “fused together with software.” This is how Phill Schiller, VP at Apple, refers to it:
It’s a single drive, with applications and OS stored on the SSD and documents on the spinning drive — it’s not a new technology, certainly, but it’s a clever way to pair the speed of an SSD with the capacity of a traditional drive.

More under the hood with less volume

The new iMac is thinner by 5mm than the previous model and has 40% less volume. Quite an update, I dare say! But the new iMac is not only incredibly thin, but it also has an reengineered display that is said to reduce reflection by 75 percent.

Reducing the reflection doesn’t make a compromise in colour and contrast, though. With the new iMac, gamers and those that need high performance, will be very pleased. It sports the latest Nvidia GeForce processors that can deliver up to 60 percent faster performance. Appealing, pleasing – good job, Apple. And here’s what Fusion Drive actually means:
Fusion Drive is an innovative new storage option that gives customers the performance of flash storage and the capacity of a hard drive. It combines 128GB of flash with a standard 1TB or 3TB hard drive to create a single storage volume that intelligently manages files to optimize read and write performance. Fusion Drive adapts to the way you use your iMac and automatically moves the files and apps you use most often to flash storage to enable faster performance and quicker access.
For those of you that care about the environment, you should know that the new iMac uses up to 50 percent less energy than its predecessor in idle mode and its  fLED-backlit displays are mercury-free and constructed with arsenic-free glass. Once more, the iMac manages to remain the top choice of all-in-one computers
