Spy on Your Friend’s Sleep Pattern Using Facebook

Facebook has been deeply imbibed in our lifestyle so much so that a Denmark based developer has found out a way to track a person’s sleep pattern based on his Facebook usage. The developer, Soren Louv-Jansen takes help from the activity timestamps that Facebook stores in its site and the Messenger app, a fact that most of the common folks are oblivious to. Next, the app finds its premise in the basic use pattern that people check Facebook at the morning and before going to sleep.

The tool has already been submitted on GitHub repository and the software checks user’s database every ten minutes to construct its results. Soren’s team based on the research have also found out that their friends were regular throughout the week and it was rarely that the pattern was broken.
On the other hand, this tool seems to have pissed off Facebook who are discouraging others from using the tool as it apparently violates site’s term of service. As of now already 1000 people have downloaded the code from Github and the developer has made it clear that he won’t pull down the tool. He further added that the tool was a subtle way of creating awareness on the degree of personal information can be skimmed from the publicly available ones.
In an interview with Washington Post here is what Soren had to say about his tool, “My point was not to spy on my friends, I want people to be aware that they’re leaving some digital footsteps everywhere they go.” While it might be a bit of bold move, he is not wrong at all, in fact all of us, however careful we are, tend to leave our footprints online and this is something that anyone can use against us or make revenue from in a non-legit manner. On a related note, you can also check SleepingTime.org which figures out the sleeping pattern of anyone using Twitter.
