With the release of Spirit untethered jailbreaking tool
earlier today, we can now jailbreak any iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch
running firmware 3.1.x or 3.2 with a single click. We have even posted
step-by-step guides to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 and jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 using Spirit.
But then, due to the nature of the jailbreaking exploit in Spirit,
Apple can easily patch the exploit in their latest firmware update.
Hence it becomes very necessary to backup your SHSH files before
jailbreaking your device using Spirit. According to Redmondpie,SHSH blob or ECID SHSH is a unique signature which is checked against Apple servers whenever you decide to restore the firmware on any of your iDevice (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch). Once a new firmware is released, Apple stops signing the older firmware, hence making it impossible to restore back to the older firmware from iTunes.
There are several ways to backup your SHSH blob. We will use Auto-SHSH Grabber by iH8sn0w, which works for the iPad and iPhone 3GS only.
Step 1: Go to the iH8sn0w’s site, and look at the very top of the page for the AutoSHSH – 3.1.3/3.2 [RC2] link.
Step 2: Download the .exe from mediafire
Step 3: Open the app, it will ask if you have Java installed, if you don’t have, click on NO and it will automatically download Java for you.
Step 4: Install Java and then run the app.
Step 5: You will see the below screen
Step 6: Enter into Recovery Mode. For iPad, turn it off, then hold down the HOME button and at the same time plug the USB cable into your iPad (other end must be connected to your Windows PC) and continue to hold the HOME button. You will then see the Recovery logo appear
Step 7: click on “Grab my SHSH Blobs Automatically” button.
Step 8: It will ask you to name and save the SHSH file locally on your PC first. Find a safe place and save the file.
Step 9: The program saves the SHSH file in the location you just chose and it will upload your SHSH blob to Cydia’s server also for safe keeping.
Voila! You have saved your SHSH blob for future use (if required)! And now feel free to jailbreak your iDevice!
