Asus Zenfone Zoom Launched at Rs 37,999; Features 3X Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilization

As expected, Asus has today released its camera centric Zenfone Zoom in India at an event in Agra. The Zenfone Zoom was teased at CES 2015, then unveiled at IFA 2015 and only released in Taiwan last month. Thanks to a number of delays, the launch had been pushed in India. The Asus Zenfone Zoom has been launched with a hefty price tag of Rs 37,999.

Asus Zenfone Zoom is equipped with a 5.5-inch FHD display wrapped in Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protective layer. The Zenfone Zoom will be the thinnest phone to accommodate a camera unit with 3x optical zoom and it promises to bring DSLR like experience on the smartphone. Now this is something that many manufacturers have been trying to do and according to me the closest someone came was the Nokia Lumia 1020. The Zenfone Zoom is fitted with a 13-Megapixel front snapper accompanied by a laser autofocus and Optical Image Stabilization. Under the hood lies an Intel Atom Z3590 clocked at 2.5GHz and paired with a mammoth 4GB of RAM.
Unlike other phones in the Zenfone lineup, this time around Asus has blended the full metal body with leather and this gives it a much needed classy look. The Zenfone Zoom comes with a dedicated camera hardware button and the company claims that the laser autofocus latches on in just 0.03Seconds.
The 10-element lenses with 3X optical zoom is the USP of the Zenfone Zoom and thankfully all this imaging goodness is packed in 11.95mm. The laser focus would come in handy even while shooting those 4K videos and even the run of the mill photography. The front snapper shapes up in the form of a 5-Megpixel sensor. On the storage front the Zenfone Zoom offers 64GB of inbuilt memory along with an expandable memory card slot that can accommodate an extra 128GB of memory. And to power them all, there’s a 3000mAh battery on the ZenFone Zoom.
Asus Zenfone Zoom will run Android Lollipop 5.0 wrapped in the latest version of the Zen UI. The device comes with the usual set of connectivity features including 4G LTE and Bluetooth 4.1. The Zenfone Zoom will be available in two colors, black and white. Asus will throw in the Zen Flash and tripod as well if you shell out Rs 39,999. It will be available from 22 January on Flipkart and ASUS Exclusive Stores from February 2016.
We saw Gionee shock us with the pricing of another camera centric smartphone – the Elife E8, and now Asus has done the same with the Zenfone Zoom. Globally, it’s priced at $399, and in India, it converts to $560. It surely has some rocking specs and features “on paper” when it comes to the camera, but remains to be seen how much of it translates in real life performance.
