Nexus 7: Google’s Nexus Tablet to be Announced at Google I/O

June 2012 continues as the most exciting month of the year in regards to consumer tech related announcements. After Apple’s WWDC 2012 & Microsoft’s Windows 8 Surface Tablet + Windows Phone 8 announcements, Google is set to wow the geeks at Google I/O 2012, scheduled to start from June 27th. The rumor mills have already started to churn out what’s expected to be announced at Google I/O, the big news being the launch of Google branded Nexus tablet.

Though we were sure to see a Nexus tablet at Google I/O this year, Gizmodo Australia claims to have gotten hold of an internal training document detailing the upcoming tablet. Here is what we can know from the document:

  • The new Android tablet from Google will be named Nexus 7 and will be manufactured by Asus.
  • It will boast a 7-inch screen, similar to Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet.
  • The screen will be an IPS display with 1280×800 resolution.
  • It will run the next iteration of Android: Jelly Bean.
  • Internal specs include 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM with two different storage variants: 8GB and 16GB.
  • The 8GB model will cost USD 199 and the 16GB will cost USD 249!
  • It will come with WiFi b/g/n as well as NFC.
  • Battery life is advertised to last nine hours.
  • As for the camera, it will come with an outdated 1.2 megapixel front-facing web-cam.
This confirms that Google intends to take on Amazon’s low cost Kindle Fire tablet, rather than Apple’s high end iPad or Microsoft’s soon-to-be-launched Surface. Back in Feb 2012, we had written about the rumored Nexus tablet and told that it will be priced at $199. What’s changed though is the OS version!
What’s more interesting to note in the leaked training document is that Google plans to handle operating system updates from now on, which could address the fragmentation problem. It isn’t clear if Google intends to handle all OS updates from now on or just the updates related to Nexus 7. But then, Google providing updates to Nexus devices is nothing new. It remains to be seen if Google mandates OEMs to provide consistent android experience on all the tablets like how Microsoft plans to do with Windows 8.

Some of the items that were ranked at the top of that list have definitely made us think twice before making a call or looking up updates on Facebook. The keyboard on which you typed to get to this page, or the touchscreen that you swipe on are some of the most bacteria-rich items in your household, so keeping these squeaky clean should be a top priority. While there are lots of methods and products for cleaning these items, most of us ignore this. How similar do you find this scenario: Your smartphone’s screen is really dirty, so you rub it on your shirt, or a piece of cloth that’s close by, or you remember that it’s been some time since you’ve cleaned your keyboard, so you turn it upside down and give it a few slaps. Most of us use this (or a very similar) technique and think “Now it’s clean!”, but the truth of the matter is that it’s j...
